SHATTER GIRL is a New Adult contemporary fiction novel about finding your own place in the world, and falling in love in the process. I put together this soundtrack as I was writing the first draft of Shatter Girl, and it has shifted and grown with the story until it fit almost perfectly.
Each song on the playlist has a specific scene or vibe I felt for the story, and I would love to walk you through some of my favorites.
Can’t Help Falling in Love by Haley Reinhart
This is a cover of an Elvis song, but I think Haley did a beautiful job of adding a new layer of depth and emotion to the song that fit Aubrey and Jude’s story perfectly.
Take my hand
Take my whole life too
Oh, for I can't help
Fallin' in love with you
Jude and Aubrey spend an entire summer together discovering themselves and each other, and I love how effortlessly they seem to fall in love in the process. If there was ever a need for a montage edit, this is the song. I don’t make the rules.
august by Taylor Swift
August slipped away into a moment in time
'Cause it was never mine
A good part of the last half of the book takes place in August, and this song by Taylor just gives the perfect vibe of running out of time, not wanting the month to end, and real life to begin again. This is a fear vocalized by Aubrey and Jude throughout the novel.
Everybody Dies by Billie Eilish
Honestly such a tongue in cheek pick but it works so well! I picture this song starting right at the most climactic part of the book,
You oughta know
That even when it's time
You might not wanna go
But it's okay to cry
And it's alright to fold
But you are not alone
You are not unknown
For me, the ending is not a tragedy or sad. Aubrey in the end found herself and got what she wanted: to be loved fully and completely. In the end, Aubrey’s story was always meant to finish when it did.
